The Ability Garden

The Ability Garden has operated on the grounds of the New Hanover County Arboretum since 1999. Our mission is to empower the under-served through gardening, education, inclusion and community engagement.  We provide professionally directed horticulture activities for individuals and groups living with disabilities, older adults and target positive youth development.  We serve as a model for other sites interested in integrating gardening and nature based activities into their programming and provide therapeutic horticulture at the Arboretum and through community outreach.  With both an indoor, greenhouse classroom and an outdoor classroom, we are able to offer programming year-round.  The beautiful grounds of the Arboretum provide a dynamic interactive educational space for engaging in gardening with a therapeutic goal, which is assessed on a group-by-group basis...more information

Arboretum Plant Guide

When you are walking the grounds at the Arboretum and you have any questions as to what type of plant, tree or shrub you are viewing check out this guide.  We are indebted to the work of Richard Buggeln.  Richard is a Friend of the Arboretum, a Master Gardener, a member of the Tidewater Camellia Club, just to name a few.  We are grateful for his contributions to the Arboretum.

This guide is a compilation of all the plants (annuals, perennials), shrubs and trees you will find at the Arboretum.  It continues to be a work in progress.  We also thank Jon Wooten (also a Master Gardener) who has taken a number of the photos in this guide.

We hope you enjoy it!

Garden Clubs in the Greater Cape Fear Area

Highlight:  A Valuable Contribution to the Community by a member of the Friends of the NHC Arboretum

Betty Gail Buggeln and her husband Richard have been members of the Friends of the NHC Arboretum since 2015.  They also have been members of the Tidewater Camellia Club since 2010. While in her role as Publicity Chair for the Club, she came up with the idea to create a list of the camellia shows and events for the Tidewater Camellia Club to keep members informed of the club’s activities.  This idea grew to include a compilation (i.e. a Master List) of all the Garden Clubs found in the greater Wilmington area since then.  Richard has been invaluable in keeping the garden club and garden event information up to date in a computer database.  This database is housed within the Friends website (i.e. friends-nhcarboretum.org) in the links section. There are currently 26 garden clubs in this part of North Carolina.  The clubs, along with the Arboretum, help Wilmington residents to enjoy the beauty of flowers and to learn about gardens and gardening.

Good luck in searching something of interest to you!
